A professional development seminar on rock mass failures in hard rock mining will be held June 1-3 at Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ont.
The seminar will run in conjunction with a Canadian mining and industrial equipment exhibition, also being held at the university during the same time period.
Organized by Laurentian’s geomechanics research centre and the Mining Research Directorate at Sudbury, the seminar will consist of two full days (June 1-2) of sessions on the central theme, and a field trip on the last day (June 3), to a hard rock mine in the Sudbury area, under the guidance of company geologists and ground control engineers.
The main objective of the seminar, the organizers say, is to assist mine operators in incorporating current state-of-the-art ground control technology into the design of mine layouts and mine sequencing to minimize risks of rock bursts and falls of ground.
The registration fee is $195 ($225 after May 15) for the seminar, and $25 for the technical visit.
Information from Dr Peter Kaiser, Chair for rock mechanics and ground control, Laurentian University, Ramsey Lake Rd., Sudbury, Ont. P3E 2C6, phone (705) 673-6517.
