The Underwater Mining Institute will hold its annual conference from Oct. 21 to 24 at the Days Inn in downtown Toronto.
Technical sessions will feature discussions of diamond and metal recovery from the sea floor.
Diamond topics include: resource management at De Beers Marine; diamond production off the coast of Namibia; exploration for diamonds and gold off the coast of Ghana; reserve estimation of marine diamond deposits; and contrasting styles of diamond mineralization.
Metals topics include: underwater deposits and their effect on exploration strategy; sulphide mineralization in the ocean; shallow gold mineralization in the Lihir Islands area; contribution of sea-floor research to land-based exploration for volcanogenic massive sulphides.
Among the speakers scheduled to appear are representatives of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Diamond Fields International, Namibian Minerals, Inmet Mining, Inco, and the universities of Toronto, Hawaii, Southampton and Tasmania,
