Scorpio completes Candelaria drilling

Vancouver — An underground drill program by Scorpio Mining (SPM-V) has returned mixed values from the Candelaria zone on the past-producing Nuestra Senora polymetallic project in Mexico’s Senora state.

The high-grade zone, one of four past-producing mines on the property, was subject to a 17-hole drill program in 2000. Eleven of the holes cut mineralization ranging up to 28.7% zinc, 6.7% lead, 2.1% copper, 2.2 grams gold and 87.1 grams silver per tonne over 2.8 metres in hole 5.

In the current program, holes 8, 9 and 12 tested for extensions of the known mineralization south of the mine. They failed to cut any significant values.

Holes 13 and 14 followed up on encouraging values hit last year in hole 9 (6.2 metres grading 1% copper, 3.5% zinc, 2.2% lead, 545 grams silver and 1.6 grams gold per tonne).

Hole 13 cut three zones, returning up to 1.11% copper, 0.45% zinc, 0.69% lead, 330 grams silver and 1.6 grams gold.

Hole 14 also hit three zones. Values ranged up to 0.8% copper, 0.18% zinc, 0.86% lead, 267 grams silver and 3.4 grams gold over 3.4 metres.

Moving 25 metres to the east, hole 11 cut 1.2 metres grading 0.32% copper, 0.16% zinc, 1% lead, 323 grams silver and 0.9 gram gold.

This round of drilling is now complete and Scorpio is compiling all the data. The company has its sights set on a second round of underground drilling later in the year.

In production from 1956 to 1966, Scorpio has completed airborne magnetics, electromagnetics and radiometric geophysical surveys over the property, as well as satellite imagery, ground geophysics, underground sampling, bulk-sampling and three phases of metallurgical testing.

Mineralization is hosted in a stacked manto carbonate replacement deposit, which is open in all directions.

Past exploitation from the mine is reported to be 120,000 tonnes grading 0.8 gram gold, 750 grams silver, 2.8% copper, 3.5% lead and 6.5% zinc.
