Samax hits more gold at Geita

Drilling by Samax Resources (SMX-T) has cut several wide intervals of gold mineralization at the Geita gold project in the Lake Victoria Goldfields district of Tanzania.

Geita, which is wholly owned by Samax, covers 250 sq. km of the Geita greenstone belt.

Nine reverse-circulation (RC) holes and one rapid-air-blast (RAB) hole were drilled to follow-up previous results from the Area 1 zone (recently renamed Kukuluma). Nearly all the holes contained higher-grade subzones within broader zones of mineralization; two holes extended mineralization intersected by previous drilling.

Gold values ranged from a low of 2.5 grams per tonne over 12 meters in RC hole 26 to a high of 28.5 grams gold over 10 metres in RC hole 12. The latter interval occurred in a wider zone of 38 metres averaging 8.1 grams.

Highlights from RC drilling include: hole 4, which returned 80 metres grading 6.9 grams gold, including 32 metres of 13.7 grams; hole 5, which yielded 55 metres grading 2.9 grams, including 11 metres of 5.5 grams; hole 20, which averaged 2.5 grams over 52 metres, including 12 metres of 6.3 grams; and hole 21, which averaged 2.9 grams over 55 metres, including 11 metres of 5.5 grams.

The RAB hole, which was collared between holes 11 and 12, returned 14 metres of 3.6 grams and bottomed out in mineralization. Samex plans to follow it up with RC drilling.

To date, the Kukuluma zone has been tested by 29 RC holes over a strike length of 600 metres, though geophysical surveying and scout drilling suggest a possible length of 1.5 km. The zone consists of four subvertical parallel sheet-like bodies contained in a 150-metre zone of sheared ironstone, chert and tuffaceous volcanics. Mineralization has been intersected to depths of between 120 and 150 metres below surface, where it remains open.

Samax plans to drill an additional 19 RC holes at Kukuluma over the next month, after which it will begin a resource calculation. Following this, the company will begin definition drilling and initiate further exploration drilling at several other promising targets on the property (T.N.M., Sept.

29/97).

The Geita project is situated 160 km northwest of the Golden Pride gold deposit, where Samax’s equal joint-venture partner, Resolute Samantha of Australia, is developing a mine.
