S. Australia aims to boost exploration

The South Australian government will spend A$15 million over five years in an effort to triple mineral exploration in the state by 2007.

The government also wants to boost annual mineral production in South Australia by a third, to A$3 billion, by 2020.

Companies will be encouraged to explore in four main areas: the Gawler Craton, Officer Basin, Musgrave Block, and Curnarmona province.

Experts believe these areas might contain a deposit comparable in size to Olympic Dam or Broken Hill.

“What we’re looking for is another mine the size of the Roxby Downs copper-uranium mine,” says Michael Rann, premier of South Australia.
