Roundup Video: NWT targets 2027 Mineral Resources Act launch

Roundup Video: NWT targets 2027 Mineral Resources Act launchNWT Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister Caitlin Cleveland (R) in conversation with TNM's Western Editor, Henry Lazenby, during a recent Vancouver event.

Canada’s Northwest Territories is aiming to finalize regulations for its Mineral Resources Act by mid-2027, a step needed to bring the 2019 law into force and replace parts of the current mineral-tenure system.

The new rules are being developed with Indigenous governments and are intended to give developers clearer direction on the relationship steps required to move projects forward, Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister Caitlin Cleveland said. One of the goals is to remove the territory’s biggest bottleneck – the complexity of a co-managed regulatory system that includes the federal and Indigenous governments through land and water boards and environmental assessments.

“Although it is cold, the people are warm,” Cleveland told The Northern Miner’s Western Editor, Henry Lazenby, last month during an industry event. “So come up, meet us, and let’s do business.”

Cleveland tied the territory’s regulatory push to new public geoscience releases meant to cut early-stage risk, including a territory wide permafrost database and a high-resolution airborne geophysical survey over the Pine Point area south of Great Slave Lake near Hay River.
