Rosemont Copper enlists ABB for mill drives

Rosemont Copper, a subsidiary of Augusta Resource (AZC-T, AZC-X), has contracted ABB Switzerland to supply mill drives for the company’s Rosemont copper mine.

The Swiss power and automation supplier will provide three gearless mill drives to be used at the mine, located near Tucson, Ariz.

As part of the contract, valued at nearly US$42 million, ABB will supply a 16-megawatt gearless mill system for a 36-ft.-diameter semi-autogenous grinding mill and two 16- megawatt gearless mill drive systems for 26-ft.-diameter ball mills.

The drives will be installed on the pre-existing Polysius supplied mills ordered in 2007.

The Rosemont copper deposit currently hosts a 7.2-billion-lb. copper resource that will account for 10% of U. S. copper output once it begins production in 2011.
