A second robbery in six weeks has Sierra Minerals (SIM-T) rethinking security at its Cerro Colorado gold mine, in Sonora, Mexico.
During the most recent theft, on July 18, about two weeks’ production was taken from the mine site, about the same amount stolen in a June 6 robbery.
No other details were given about the robbery, which is under investigation, nor was anyone from the company available for comment.
In a statement, Sierra said it plans to make a second announcement, along with its plan to expand security in addition to improvements made after the last robbery.
On June 6, three gold bars weighing about 750 oz. and worth about US$502,000 were stolen from the secured gold room at the project site only hours before an armoured truck was scheduled to take the bars to a United States-based refinery.
The gold bars also represented about two weeks’ production.
After the first heist, Sierra declared it would tighten security at the mine. The company said it would conduct a safety audit and consider buying expanded insurance coverage.
These robberies were the first the company experienced since beginning production in 2004.
No one was hurt during either incident.
