Robbers target Sierra gold mine

A second robbery in six weeks has Sierra Minerals (SIM-T) rethinking security at its Cerro Colorado gold mine in Sonora, Mexico.

During yesterdays theft, about two weeks production was taken from the mine site, which is about the same amount stolen in a June 6 robbery.

No other details were given about the robbery, which is under investigation, nor was anyone from the company available for comment.

In a statement, Sierra said it plans to make a second announcement soon, along with its plans to expand security in addition to improvements made after the last robbery.

On June 6, three gold bars weighing about 750 oz. gold and worth about US$502,000, were stolen from the secured gold room at the project site only hours before an amoured truck was scheduled to take the bars to a United States-based refinery.

The gold bars also represented about two weeks production.

After the first heist, Sierra declared it would tighten security at the mine. The company said it would conduct a safety audit and consider buying expanded insurance coverage.

These robberies were the first the company experienced since going into production in 2004.

No one was hurt during either incident.
