Rio, UBC establish Colin Spence memorial fund

Rio Algom Exploration has set up a scholarship fund in honor of geologist Colin Spence, who was killed recently in the Philippines.

Mr. Spence was part of a team of geologists inspecting a gold mine 200 km north of Manila when the helicopter that was carrying them came under fire.

No one else was injured.

The award is to be offered on a 2-year basis to a graduate student in a master’s program in geological sciences, geological engineering or geophysics.

Contributions to the fund can be made payable to “The Colin Spence Memorial Fund” and addressed to UBC Development Office, 6253 N.W. Marine Dr., Vancouver, B.C. V6T 1Z1.
