Rio Tinto (rtp-n) has announced it will continue with feasibility work on Las Cruces, a copper property in southern Spain.
The company has located copper mineralization 15 km north of Seville, within the Iberian Pyrite belt. Early indications suggest the deposit contains 15 million tonnes of mineralization grading 6% copper. More than 1 million tonnes of the resource contain gold-bearing gossans grading 6.5 grams gold per tonne.
The company believes there is an additional resource of some 25 million tonnes containing 3% copper, as well as zinc, lead, gold and silver.
Rio Tinto is considering processing the material, which is predominantly chalcocite, using leaching and solvent extraction-electrowinning methods.
The feasibility study will include additional drilling, hydrogeological and environmental assessments, and metallurgical testing.
