Toronto-based Rex Diamond Mining (CDN) says it has exposed a new diamond-bearing fissure that could double production at its Ardo mine in South Africa.
The company says the fissure, which is more than 2 km long and 80 cm wide, has returned a grade of 1 carat per ton. Rex plans to test the fissure’s potential by taking a 1,000-ton sample from a new prospecting shaft. Reserves at the Ardo mine currently stand at 6 million tons and Rex believes the new fissure could add up to 3 million additional tons. The increased output will be processed by a new plant being built on the property.
Meanwhile, at the nearby Bellsbank mine, Rex has uncovered a 92.5-carat diamond. The gem, expected to be worth more than US$30,000 per carat when cut, will be cleaved into two stones.
