Researchers study devices for locating miners

The Mining Research Directorate, based in Sudbury, Ont., is investigating the feasibility of developing a device that will aid in the location of miners who become trapped or go missing underground.

A contract has been awarded to Associated Mine Consultants to review the technology, and to assess the needs of industry in this area.

The Calgary-based company is seeking input from interested parties who have relevant technology, or who have an opinion on the performance characteristics that the miner-locator device should possess. Further information is available by contacting John Greenwell at (403) 264-9496.
