The Mineral Deposit Research Unit, a joint initiative between the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the mining industry, is looking for qualified people to staff a research project oriented toward gold mineralization in northern British Columbia. The project’s primary goal will be to undertake research in all aspects of mineral deposits.
One project, partially funded by nine companies including Prime Resources, Homestake Mining, LAC Minerals, Gulf International, Newhawk Gold, Placer, Noranda, Cominco, and Skyline, is centred around the Snip, Eskay Creek, and Sulphurets area, just north of Stewart, B.C.
The companies have agreed to make all their data (except market- sensitive material) available to the study group. The research unit will undertake a 3-year investigation into structural and stratigraphic constraints to alteration/mineralization in the area. This will allow the group to develop a screening process to evaluate the wide range of mineralization found there.
John McDonald, the unit’s interim director, noted that a research associate or post-doctoral fellow and a Ph.D. candidate are required for the research team.
The Mineral Deposit Research Unit is also sponsoring a short course April 23-27 inclusive at the Department of Geological Sciences of UBC — “Geostatistics for the Mining Industry: New Concepts, New Tools.” The course will alternate between lectures and computer- based workshop sessions, and a data base from an existing precious metal mine will be used. Cost is $600 for members of the unit, $750 for non-members.
