Research centre finds home in Ontario’s north

A $6.8-million research and development program at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ont., will focus on developing mining and environmental monitoring technology.

The Ontario government provided $2.2 million, with the remainder contributed by the university and the private sector.

The objective is to cut mining costs, as well as improve waste management and reclamation techniques.

As part of the program, two chairs will be created at the university — one in environmental monitoring technology; the other in mining technology and innovation.

The program is also intended to offset the “brain-drain” of researchers to the United States, says Earth, Science and Technology Minister James Wilson.

Laurentian will manage the program, which benefits from contributions by Denison Mines, Falconbridge, Rio Algom and Inco, as well as non-profit organizations.

Other partners include the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, Memorial University, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
