Remembering Christmas past

As the Christmas season approaches, I recall a story that occurred more than 30 years ago.

The Steep Rock iron mine, near Atikokan, Ont., was going to install a conveyor belt system that would transport iron ore from the south end of the pit to the north end, where the ore would be loaded on to train cars and shipped to a mill in Wisconsin.

In the six months before the sale, our salesman made several trips to the mine because our company, as well as the manufacturer, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., was anxious to fill the order.

It was 11 a.m. on Dec. 24, and our staff was preparing to close shop for the holiday, when a car pulled up. Bill Rennie, purchasing manager for Steep Rock, stepped out of the car and handed us an envelope containing an order for the belt.

He told us that Mr. Fotheringham, president and manager of Steep Rock, told him to make a special trip and hand-deliver the $250,000 order.

It was a fine Christmas present indeed.
