A conference examining the relationship between mining companies and aboriginal groups will be held Nov. 20-21 at the Westmark Hotel in Whitehorse, Y.T.
The conference, entitled “Making the Grade: The Mineral Industry and Aboriginal Community Development,” will assess partnerships between mining companies and aboriginal groups, as well as progress that has been made in communications, consultation and problem solving.
Forums will address such areas as: aboriginal land claims around the world; promoting community development; and negotiations.
Workshops topics include: aboriginal and treaty rights; assessment of mineral prospects; environmental management; and information sessions related to international development.
Among the industry and aboriginal leaders scheduled to speak are: Chief Joe Jack of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation; Frank Calder, Elder of Nisga’a Nation; Chief Harry Cook of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band; Chief Katie Rich of the Innu Nation; Syda Bbumba, Uganda’s minister for economic monitoring; John Willson, president of Placer Dome; Douglas Horswill, vice-president of environment and corporate affairs for Cominco; and Karl Elers, chairman of Battle Mountain Gold.
