Record Mint year

Sales of the Maple Leaf gold coin in 1987 totalled more than 1.4 million oz, or 40% of all gold mined in Canada last year, the Royal Canadian Mint reports.

The Mint says the Maple Leaf coin, on a world-wide basis, enjoyed a 45% market share last year. Of the almost $873 million in Maple Leaf revenues, more than 90% of that total was generated abroad. During fiscal 1987, the Mint generated record revenues of $1.03 billion and had net earnings of $20.7 million. Compared with 1986, revenues climbed 13.4% (from $910.6 million), while profits more than doubled (from $9.8 million).

The Olympic coin program commemorating the Calgary games has sold, to date, more than three million silver coins and more than 140,000 gold coins.

Last year also saw the introduction of a new one-dollar coin in Canada; the Mint says that by the end of 1989, the new coin will have completely replaced the one dollar note.

The Mint introduced the .9999 Maple Leaf gold coin in 1979, and has since sold more than 10 million troy oz of the widely-traded coin.
