Dr. Mohamed Fazel Randera has been appointed health advisor for the Chamber of Mines of South Africa.
Previously, Randera was inspector general of the country’s Intelligence Services and served as commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which dealt with human rights violations.
In the mid-1980s, he helped establish the National Medical and Dental Association, which provided medical and psychological care to political detainees and victims of torture.
He served as chairman of the National Medical and Dental Association, the Ethics, Human Rights and Law Committee of the South African Medical Association and the Ethics Institute of South Africa.
“[Randera’s] appointment forms part of the chamber’s ongoing commitment to building a senior staff structure which accurately reflects the democratic profile of our country,” says Mzolisi Diliza, the chamber’s chief executive.
