Ram claims record for raise

A member of the J.S. Redpath group of companies, Ram Raising, is claiming a world record for the longest

Working at the Detour gold mine of Placer Dome near Timmins, Ont., Ram says it excavated a raise 1,757 ft. by 8 ft. in diameter using an air-driven Alimak climber in a single pass.

Plans call for this pilot raise, which will act as a fresh air intake, to be slashed to a diameter of 15.5 ft.

Ram employees worked two shifts per day. The average daily advance was 18 ft. per day during drilling and blasting. Including delays and extra work, the overall advance was 16.2 ft. per day. No lost time or accidents were posted.
