For the second year in a row, Quintette Coal Limited was presented a trophy by the provincial government in the large mine competition for having achieved the highest standard of job safety performance. The Quintette mine, located at Tumbler Ridge, employs 1,363 workers and had only 25 lost- time accidents in 1988.
Bullmoose Operating Corporation, also located in Tumbler Ridge, was recognized at the recent awards ceremony as the safest open pit mine in a smaller mine competition category.
Five mines shared a trophy presented to the mine with the best safety record with less than 200,000 operating man hours: Elkhorn- Westroc, Baymag, Blubber Bay, Pier Mac Sand and Gravel, and Jacke Cewe Ltd.
Certificates of Achievement for mine safety were presented to Clayburn Industries, Nels Ostero Ltd., Valley Rite-Mix, Sechelt (RivTow Industries), and Blackhams Construction.
Safety statistics show that the number of time loss injuries in the British Columbia mining industry have been halved in the last eight year period.
