Rescue teams from Quintette Coal and the Myra Falls mine were the surface and underground champions, respectively, at mine rescue and first-aid competitions held recently in Revelstoke, B.C.
More than 1,000 spectators turned out to watch 10 rescue teams extinguish fires, rescue people from buildings with toxic atmospheres, lower and raise accident victims to safety using rope techniques, and rescue workers from motor vehicle accident scenes.
The championships were judged by government mines inspectors. Cominco’s Sullivan mine was the champion 3-person first-aid team. Also, Boliden won the Barry Abbott memorial trophy for the best underground team “at the bench,” assembling equipment and testing skills.
The Eskay Creek mine was awarded the John T. Ryan trophy for the safest undergound operation.
