Query Brewis Red Lake revived as cosmetics distributor

I have a stock certificate for 500 shares of Brewis Red Lake Mines Ltd., purchased in 1945. I am trying to find out if this mine is still operating, and if so, what name it is now under. Christine Humphreys Brampton, Ont. Brewis Red Lake Mines, which began its life as a gold exploration company in 1945, was one of the nearly 250 new companies formed in the second gold rush to Red Lake, Ont., in the mid 1940s. This gold rush is described in great detail in a well illustrated book written by D. F. Parrott, entitled “The Second Gold Rush to Red Lake.”

During that rush, some 20,000 mining claims were staked in over 24 townships and more than 5,000 men took part. As a result of the gold rush, a total of 15 mines later came into production. The Red Lake District mines have produced some 20 million oz of gold in 57 years. Red Lake ranks 5th in Canada after the Porcupine, Kirkland Lake, Hemlo, and Val d’Or camps.

The original property owned by Brewis Red Lake Mines consisted of 14 claims in Balmer Twp. The property was located east of the Campbell mine and north of the Dickenson mine. Some drilling was reported during the period 1946-47. Brewis also explored property in the Mayo district of the Yukon Territory during the 1950s.

The company was succeeded in 1955 by DeCoursey-Brewis Minerals on a basis of one new share for eight old. The latter company changed its name in 1964 to Consolidated Brewis Minerals on a basis of one new share for four old. This company changed its name in 1977 to Conbrew Resource Explorers on a basis of two new shares for three old. The 14-claim property in the Red Lake area was then transferred to Dickenson Mines (TSE) in satisfaction of $196,850 plus accrued interest owed to Dickenson.

After giving effect to the various share exchanges up to 1977, you would end up with 10 shares of Conbrew. The original company’s Ontario Charter was cancelled in 1979. It was revived in 1982 and became Beauty Counsellors International Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of cosmetics.

I found certificate where my father had purchased 37 shares in the Yukeno Mines Limited on Apr. 2, 1951 and I was wondering if they were worth anything.

I just found stock certificates (150) of South State Uranium Mines Limited, which my aunt had left me and I had forgotten all about. Do they have any value. Any other information would be appreciated as well.

    Thanks
