I have a stock certificate for 100 shares purchased in 1909 in a company called Frances Gold Mines Ltd. The shares sold for $2 each at the time of purchase 80 years ago. Can you determine if this stock certificate has any current value? John C. Davis Phoenix, Ariz.

The Frances Gold Mines certificate you hold probably has more value as a collector’s item nowadays than it does as a mining stock. The artwork depicting old-time prospectors at work on the front of the certificate is quite interesting and rare.

The company held 100 acres of property on the Michipicoten River in the Algoma district in northern Ontario.

A search of our records on Fran– ces Gold Mines revealed that its Ontario corporate charter was cancelled on June 13, 1960. The company had been idle for many years prior to that. With the charter cancelled, the company’s stock would have no market value today.
