The claims, situated in Steele, Purvis, Bowyer and Galna twps., cover a 22.5-km section of the Lake Abitibi deformation zone, a major fault contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks.
Flexures, or warps, exist along the deformation zones, and Queenston says these may be indicative of gold deposits.
Based on geological compilation and interpretation of the area, the most logical up-ice source of the gold is believed to be along the Lake Abitibi zone.
Gold-bearing quartz boulders have been found in three locations. About 10 km south of Queenston’s land package, a grab sample from a boulder returned 32 grams gold per tonne. Quartz boulders have also been found on the western portion of the company’s properties in the Camp Three Bay area. The boulders are under water in Lake Abitibi.
In addition, gold has been panned from glacial sediments along three eskers in the area. One of the eskers extends south from the central portion of the claims. The gold ranges from fine-grained to coarse-grained and displays a variety of colours, indicating potential for multiple sources.
Drilling on the claims by previous operators targeted glacial till. Along the length of the claim group, 30 of 83 reverse-circulation holes intersected gold in heavy-mineral concentrate. Assays ranged from 1 to 18 grams per tonne.
In the summer, Queenston intends to launch an exploration program, including sampling. Ground geophysics and diamond drilling are slated for next winter.
