Quebec to study mining fatalities

The Quebec government has announced the formation of a committee to investigate mining accidents in the province. Focusing on the Abitibi or northwest region, the committee will report on the reasons for a half- dozen fatalities at differing mining projects during the summer of 1989 in that part of the province, and recommend possible solutions to improve worker safety.

Raymond Savoie, the minister responsible for mines, said he expects the 3-person committee will report before the end of the year.
