Quebec is committed to promoting the safe use of asbestos, the province’s deputy prime minister and minister of energy and resources recently told an international conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Lise Bacon said the commitment is based on a large body of scientific evidence and on the availability of a tested technology that makes it possible to work safely with asbestos.
Quebec, which produces the majority of Canada’s asbestos, would like to see all fibres subjected to regulations as strict as those governing asbestos, the minister said. The province is a member of the International Fibre Safety Group, which has industry, labor, government and scientific representation from eight countries. The members have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote the safe use of asbestos and other industrial fibres. The International Conference on Asbestos Products, attended by representatives from the 40 main asbestos-producing and asbestos-importing countries, was organized by the Asbestos Institute of Montreal, Centre de Recherches Minerales du Quebec, the Canadian Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology and the South Pacific Asbestos Association of Malaysia.
