According to preliminary data for 1995, both the value of Quebec’s mineral shipments and the total investment in the province’s mining industry were up from the previous year.
Mineral shipments from Quebec in 1995 were valued at $3.1 billion, about 4% higher than in 1994. Exploration expenditures also increased, reaching $145 million, or a gain of 6%. Total investment in Quebec’s mining industry was up by 6%, reaching $943 million in 1995.
Of all minerals produced in Quebec, copper registered the greatest increase in 1995, surging 50%. The increase reflects the fact that new mines, such as Louvicourt, were brought into production.
Zinc also had a good year, with the value of shipments rising by 37%. The increase is attributable to an 31% boost in output and a slight rise in the average price of the metal.
The value of silver shipments rose by 18%, with almost no change in the average price.
