Quadrem in Middle East

Quadrem, the online market for mining and construction suppliers and buyers, has begun operating in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The new offices will mostly serve oil and gas customers but will also benefit local mining and drilling operations.

“In 2005, we will connect our global buyers and suppliers to their trading partners in the Middle East, as well as expand our customer base in the region,” says Leo van Rensburg, general manager of Quadrem in the Middle East. The strategy is designed to give Quadrem’s customers access to oil-driven wealth in the region.

More than 13,000 companies do business through Quadrem, transacting in 300 locations in six languages over the Internet.

The company enjoyed its first profitable quarter in the final three months of 2004, when revenue rose 70% higher than in 2003. Last year, companies made 1.2 million purchases on Quadrem worth roughly US$4 billion. The company expects that number to reach US$7 billion in 2005.

BDL settles in NC

German-based BDL, a maker of drum motors for conveyor belts, has established an office in Wilmington, N.C.

“Increasing demand for conveyor drive systems in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico has dictated a significant need for a North American presence,” says Randy Petitt, president of BDL America.

BDL manufactures drum motors with steel pulley shells, end caps, and terminal boxes designed to withstand extended outdoor use.

Washington Group wins

San Cristobal contract

Boise, Idaho-based engineering firm Washington Group International has secured a 10-year, US$360-million contract to develop Apex Silver‘s (SIL-X) San Cristobal silver-zinc-lead mine in southwestern Bolivia.

The Washington Group will design and build the mine, then employ contract miners.

“All of the experience we have gained over several decades of mine operations will be used to help Apex Silver develop and operate San Cristobal,” says Roy Wilkes, president of Washington Group’s mining unit. “This project will accelerate our growth in Latin America.”

Situated in the Potosi district, the mine has a proven and probable reserve of 450 million oz. silver, 8 billion lbs. zinc, and 3 billion lbs. lead.

The Washington Group has 27,000 employees in more than 30 countries.
