Province to study industrial minerals industry

Mike Brown, MPP for Algoma- Manitoulin and parliamentary assistant to Conway, will chair the committee of senior Ministry of Northern Development and Mines officials. The committee will hold discussions with industry associations and industry and community groups, and report back to the minister by Sept 1.

The four main tasks of the committee are: — to assess the current state of health of Ontario’s industrial minerals industry; — to explore and recommend ways to stimulate and maximize development, production and export opportunities for industrial minerals in Ontario; — to explore and recommend ways to streamline and clarify the rules regarding permits and approvals in order to provide a positive atmosphere in which Ontario’s industrial minerals industry can flourish while maintaining environmental integrity; and — to recommend initiatives that could be introduced to help the industrial minerals industry realize its full potential, particularly in eastern and Northern Ontario. The industrial minerals industry last year contributed more than $200 million in production value to the provincial economy and employed about 1,500 people.
