Program named after Aitken

A new sustainable development internship program will be named in memory of the late W.R.O. (Roy) Aitken, federal Environment Minister Jean Charest announced recently.

Aitken, who died last November at age 60, had been executive vice-president of Inco Ltd., president of P.T. International Nickel Indonesia and, latterly, assistant to the chairman and chief executive officer of Inco. The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, in partnership with Inco, has designed an internship program for university graduates who have been accepted for post-graduate work in a field of study compatible with the interests of the Round Table — to ingrain environmental and economic considerations into decision-making at all levels of Canadian society. Interns selected for the program will become involved in Round Table projects and in sustainable development activities of provincial and federal government agencies, environmental organizations and major resource industries.

Aitken was a member of the Round Table and served as vice-chairman of the National Task Force on the Environment and the Economy.

In the late 1980s, Aitken spearheaded Inco’s $600-million sulphur dioxide abatement program, the largest environmental cleanup in Canadian corporate history.
