Positive drill results are reported from the Joe Mann copper-gold mine south of Chibougamau, Que.
Owner Campbell Resources (TSE) reports that the work was carried out at the newly discovered West zone, which lies 1,800 ft. west of the No. 2 shaft, between 1,000 and 2,000 ft. below surface and within the Main Shear. Eleven holes representing almost 29,000 ft. have been drilled, with all of the holes intersecting anomalous gold values.
The best intersections were 0.258 oz. gold per ton over a true width of 21.2 ft. and 0.797 oz. over a true width of 6 ft. Other values ranged between 0.1 and 0.2 oz. over true widths of 6 to 7 ft. A typical mining grade and width at the mine is 0.2 oz. per ton over 6 ft.
Preliminary assessment of core indicates mineralization is similar to the Main orebody which has produced a total of 600,000 oz. gold andmore than 8 million lb. copper. At last report, Joe Mann had proven and probable reserves of 1.1 million tons averaging 0.268 oz. gold and 0.3% copper. As a result of the drilling, Campbell estimates the West hosts between 750,000 and 1.3 million tons of ore grading between 0.18 and 0.25 oz. gold. Campbell is contemplating additional underground exploration of the West zone, which plunges eastward. Such a program could entail drifting westward along existing adits in the Main orebody, which would enable operators to carry out underground drilling and bulk sampling at a reasonable cost. Additional drilling has also been performed on the down-rake extension of the Main orebody. To date, 76 holes have been drilled and gold values were intersected within four parallel shear zones that host the orebody. The intersections were at depths of up to 950 ft. below the 2,350-ft. level (the deepest working level at the mine) and ranged between 0.1 oz. and 0.97 oz. over widths of 6 to 9.4 ft.
In 1995, Campbell plans to drill an additional 150,000 ft. on both the Main orebody and West zones.
