A 16-month-long labor dispute at Westmin Resources’ (TSE) Myra Falls operations has been resolved through the process of binding arbitration. The polymetallic mine is on Vancouver Island, near the community of Campbell River, B.C.
A new wage schedule was awarded which provides for wage decreases for most job classifications over the remaining three years of the contract. Some modest increases were provided for higher job categories, and improvements in pension benefits were also provided.
Westmin says the 3-year wage freeze and the elimination of the costly housing and attendance bonuses took into account the company’s financial situation, and that the former wage and benefit package “far exceeded the industry norm.” Employees will be recalled in early September, with production to begin as soon as possible after the recall.
