Production delays at Namew Lake mine

The Namew Lake mine is 60%- owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (TSE) with the remaining 40% held by Outokompu, a subsidiary of a Finnish mining company.

The new $70-million underground nickel mine went into production last November, and was originally scheduled to yield more than 10 million lbs of nickel annually.

But Hudson Bay’s parent, Inspiration Resources (TSE), recently revised its expected share of nickel production from the mine to 6.5 million lbs, down 13% from the 7.5 million lbs estimated earlier this year.

The mine hosts proven and probable reserves of 2.82 million tons grading 2.44% nickel and 0.90% copper with small amounts of platinum group metals.

Inspiration said that despite previous delays, the mine should reach full production this month.
