The conversion to computerized systems was not difficult, according to Warren, because most workers at Key Lake were relatively young when the change took place. “At 45 and older, that age group is entrenched in the old manual system,” he says. Of the maintenance function as it is perceived generally in Canadian mines, Warren harbors no illusions: “Maintenance has always been the ogre. We’re big money-spenders.” But in the long run, it is the maintenance department that keeps the mine operating and making money, he insists.
