An explosion that killed as many as 10 people has suspended operations at the Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea.
The mine is 25% owned by Placer Pacific, a subsidiary of Placer Dome (TSE). Although few details were known at presstime, company officials said the accident happened in the mine’s explosive facility and that 10 people were working there at the time.
The workers were employed by a local contractor; five were Australian and five were residents of Papua New Guinea.
