Vancouver — George Poling, Sr., vice-president of Rescan Environmental Services, will deliver a talk on waste management and closure at the Island polymetallic mine, situated on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The talk is slated for Oct. 24 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver.
The mine was operated by Billiton (now BHP Billiton) from 1971 to 1995, during which time it produced 1.3 million tonnes copper, 31,000 tonnes molybdenum, 1.1 million oz. gold, 11.8 million oz. silver and 27 tonnes rhenium.

Expomin focuses on Antofagasta
Exponor 2001, slated for Nov. 20-24 in Antofagasta, will focus on the mining industry in northern Chile.
Each year, more than US$1.5 billion in mining equipment and services are sold in the region.
The Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export (CAMESE), which will operate a pavilion, says Exponor caters mainly to companies that sell to the extraction, processing, mine expansion, smelting, and refining and environmental divisions.
A technical conference run in conjunction with the event. Also, exhibitors can take tours of mining operations.
