In 1987, Nerco spent more than $16 million in capital improvements on the property and, when the final tally is in, 1988 expenditures are expected to be even higher. The facelift is expected to continue through 1989. Among the improvements commissioned (and for the most part completed) are new safety, engineering, and security programs and offices; equipment for underground mining and surface operations; a remodelled maintenance shop; initial construction of a new water treatment plant; and a program to get the arsenic plant operating at full capacity. The old C-1 headframe was replaced with a new conveyance system to increase production, and underground exploration and development was increased.
Last summer, Nerco said a production target of 100,000 oz per annum was possible within three years and much of the capital program, including the new C1 headframe, is directed at achieving this higher gold output.
Additional reserves are available in the C1 workings because of the improved shaft access. Some of these reserves are refractory, but that aspect would be partly offset by mechanized mining methods and possibly higher milling rates, Nerco said last year. The rated capacity of the Con mill is about 700 tons per day.
