Using Scandinavian dredging technology, Platinova and its partners, Denison Mines (TSE) and A/S Carl Nielsen of Denmark, plan a suction dredging operation from sand deposits on the lake’s bottom using a modern dredging vessel. Nielsen has extensive experience in this type of business.
Platinova President R. A. Gannicott said the large Toronto market is currently supplied by road from sand pits and quarries located up to 36 miles away. The dredging method, he said, offers environmental and cost advantages to the land operations.
Last November, the company completed two test dredging programs near Toronto, the results outlining two separate deposits of quality sand with sign ificant reserve potential. An environmental study was also undertaken. An application for a production licence is to be submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources this month.
Start-up production during the first year of operation is scheduled to reach 500,000 tonnes. At full capacity, the dredger could supply up to 1.5 million tonnes per year. A distribution facility is planned for the Toronto docks.
Future plans by Platinova and its partners include exploration of the other Great Lakes for an extension of the dredging operation.
