Placer Dome reaches mine safety milestone

Though Placer Dome has been under scrutiny since the tailings leak at its Marcopper mine in the Philippines, the company might breath a little easier now that it has broken a Canadian mine safety record.

The Campbell gold mine in northern Ontario recorded 1.8 million man hours without a lost-time accident, beating a record set in 1990 by Rio Algom’s Stanleigh mine in Elliot Lake, Ont.
