Placer Dome faces cave-in charges

The Ontario Ministry of Labour has charged Placer Dome (TSE) with two counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in connection with a cave-in Feb. 20, 1989, that killed three miners. The charges stem from an accident at Placer’s Dome mine operation at South Porcupine. The three men were engaged in a rock-bolting operation.

The ministry’s area engineer for Timmins, Doug Walli, said the first charge alleges the company failed to take every reasonable precaution under the circumstances to protect its workers. The second charge alleges the company failed to ensure its measures and procedures were carried out in the workplace.
