Results from a reconnaissance geochemistry program have induced Pioneer Metals (PSM-T) to stake 10,000 ha contiguous to its Riou Lake uranium property in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan.
The program outlined an area measuring 5 km long by 1 km wide in which several samples of sandstone boulders were found to contain greater than 50%, and up to 95%, illite. Samples taken from a separate area to the south were moderately altered to chlorite.
Both anomalies are considered significant, as illite and chlorite are the predominant alteration minerals associated with several unconformity-type uranium deposits known to exist elsewhere in the basin. Pioneer says some samples taken in the vicinity of the anomalous areas contained uranium values higher than those usually found in the region.
An electromagnetic survey is planned for the winter months.
