Phelps honours safe operations

Phelps Dodge (PD-N) has given its “million zero hours award” to four operations in recognition for having operated 1 million consecutive employee hours or more without a serious injury.

Recipients include the Candelaria copper-gold mine in Chile and wire and cabling manufacturing facilities in Venezuela, Brazil and Zambia. The four operations went without a serious injury for a combined 5 million hours.

The Candelaria mine went injury-free for 1.5 million consecutive hours; the wire and cable plant in Brazil, for 1.1 million hours; the Venezuelan plant, for 1.3 million hours; and the African plant, for 1.1 million hours.

The award encourages employees to be mindful of safety.

Phelps Dodge and its two divisions, Phelps Dodge Mining and Phelps Dodge Industries, employ more than 14,000 people worldwide.
