Operator BHP Minerals reports that the Hartley platinum mine has made its first shipment of platinum group metals to Great Britain, where they will be refined by Johnson Matthey.
The Zimbabwean mine is producing at its initial rate of 150,000 oz.
platinum per year, which is about 3.5% of the world average for platinum production.
The mine is expected to reach full production by the end of 1998. It is targeted to process 2.2 million tonnes of ore per year, from which will be produced 150,000 oz. platinum, 110,000 oz. palladium, 11,500 oz. rhodium, 23,000 oz. gold, 3,200 tonnes of nickel, 2,300 tonnes of copper, 35 tonnes of cobalt and 6,400 tonnes of sodium sulphate.
