Peruvian engineers convene

Peruvian mining engineers will convene in San Diego, Calif., from Sept. 23 to 26. The theme will be mining’s contribution to social development.

The conference provides a forum for debating issues relating to mining in Peru and throughout the world.

CIM plans field trip

On Oct. 15, the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will hold a field trip designed to demonstrate the steel-making process.

The trip will visit Larfarge Canada’s Dundas dolostone quarry and stone plant near Hamilton, Ont., and Dofasco, that city’s largest steel mill, for a hands-on account of the steel manufacturing process.

Guests will wrap up the evening with dinner overlooking the Hamilton harbour.

Guests are required to wear safety boots, long-sleeve shirts, and full-length pants during the plant tour. The cost of the trip is $100 per person.

Narrow-vein symposium

A symposium on extraction methods used in narrow-vein gold deposits is slated for Oct. 1-4 in Val d’Or, Que.

The symposium will feature visits to Cambior’s Mouska and Sleeping Giant mines, as well as the so-called Experimental mine (formerly the Beacon mine) of the Canada Centre for Mineral & Energy Technology. The mines are all near Val d’Or.

Topics for discussion include best mining practices, technological research and development, ground conditions, and economic models.

Talks mark Sullivan’s closing

Teck Cominco has arranged a series of events for Nov. 9-11 surrounding the de-commissioning of the Sullivan mine, near Kimberley, B.C.

A series of technical sessions examining the geology of the Sullivan mine will take place Nov. 9. Hugh Morris, chairman of Eldorado Gold, and Thomas Schroeter of the British Columbia Geological Survey are among the scheduled speakers. Several mine visits are scheduled for the following day.
