Noted geophysicist Philip Hallof, who specialized in induced polarization (IP), died Sept. 21. He was 61.
Born in Missouri, Hallof earned his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957. Upon graduation, he joined Toronto-based McPhar Geophysics, a leading Canadian geophysical contractor. He rose through the ranks to become president in 1961, a position he held until 1975 when the company’s ownership changed hands.
Hallof left McPhar to form Phoenix Geophysics and continued to advance IP and magnetotelluric methods. He remained president of Phoenix until 1986 when he became a consultant to the minerals industry. Among his clients was Lac Minerals.
Involved in worldwide exploration projects, Hallof has published case studies on Quebec’s Matagami area (1966), Newfoundland’s York Harbour (1971), Ontario’s volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits (1982) and the electrical properties of nickel-copper ores at Sudbury, Ont. (1982).
He became a Canadian in 1961.
