Drilling at the past-producing Marlhill mine near Timmins, Ont., indicates the presence of a sizable quantity of untapped gold beneath the old workings.
Six holes drilled by Pentland Firth Ventures (TSE) reached the productive M1 quartz vein, from which 155,000 tons of ore grading 0.18 oz. gold per ton were mined between 1989 and 1991. Pentland’s initial drilling spans a strike length of 500 ft. and extends to a depth of about 350 ft. beneath the deepest mine workings.
Gold assay results from the six drill holes include the following intersections: 0.74 oz. per ton over 5.2 ft.; 0.42 oz. over 9.8 ft.; 0.1 over 24.6 ft.; 0.19 over 6.9 ft.; 0.68 over 2.6 ft.; and 0.06 over 9.5 ft.
Pentland reports that two-thirds of the holes drilled to date have intersected smoky quartz vein material containing flecks of visible gold well away from the existing workings and from previous drilling. The M1 vein remains open along strike in two directions: downdip and down-plunge.
Meanwhile, Pentland is bringing a diamond drill onto the Schumacher III gold property, less than a mile from the Marlhill mine.
In August, Black Hawk Mining (TSE) drilled on the boundary between its property and the Schumacher. The best hole intersected 0.24 oz. gold over 6.6 ft.
Pentland can acquire a renewable, 20-year mining lease for the Schumacher property by spending $150,000 in the first year and $300,000 over the succeeding three years.
