The Queensland government in Australia has launched litigation in its Supreme Court against Pechiney in an attempt to force the French aluminum giant to surrender a bauxite lease.
The government claims Pechiney has wasted the resource, situated on Cape York Peninsula. It claims the territory has missed out of billions of dollars in economic activity because Pechiney has done nothing with the bauxite for more than 28 years.
For its part, Pechiney says the government has not given it the go-ahead to build an alumina refinery.
