PDAC sets convention agenda

The agenda of this year’s annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), scheduled for March 28-31 in Toronto, will have an international flavor.

Theme of the show at the Royal York Hotel will be “Risks and opportunities at home and abroad.” The opening talk session on Monday morning will focus on “The Canadian mineral industry in a competitive world,” to be followed in the afternoon by an update on diamond exploration activities in North America. Tuesday’s sessions will focus (in the morning) on opportunities and the investment climate in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe, and (in the afternoon) on ore reserves and the need for global standards and practices. Wednesday’s sessions will focus on mineral discoveries at home and abroad.

Scheduled to participate in a discussion and debate at Monday’s Canadian Club-PDAC joint luncheon are Liberal Party leader Jean Chretien and Reform Party leader Preston Manning. Guest speaker at the awards banquet that evening will be New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna.

The PDAC is offering a pre-convention 1-day short course March 27 on “Diamonds: exploration, sampling and evaluation.” Topics will include the geology of kimberlites, prospecting techniques, the application of geochemistry and geophysics, and sampling and sample processing. On April 1, the Geological Survey of Canada will present a post-convention 1-day “workshop on remote sensing.”

During the week March 22-26, the mines and minerals division of the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, and the Ontario Geological Survey, will present (free of charge) a variety of mineral classes in the Ontario Room of the Macdonald Block at 90 Bay St.
