The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada has organized two wilderness first aid courses for explorers.
The seminars are aimed at updating the first aid skills of people working in remote areas, far from medical assistance.
The first course is being held in Thunder Bay, Ont., over the weekend of April 19-20. The second will take place in Sudbury, Ont., on May 22-23.
The lessons, provided by Sirius Wilderness Medicine, will cover the basic principles of wilderness first aid, emphasizing practical skills, assessment, decision making, and dealing with harsh environmental conditions.
The course will teach students about: patient assessment; shock; wound management; burns; fractures and sprains; environmental injuries; common medical problems; and putting together first aid kits.
The course will also include some practical learning activities, outdoors.
The cost of the event (a reduced price because of subsidization by the PDAC) is $125 with a maximum class size of 15 people. In addition to instruction costs, the price also includes a course manual and material, and Sirius first aid certification.
Anyone wishing to participate requires CPR certification, though CPR training will be provided during the first evening for $50 per person.
